Measure the bed you actually plan to cover
The calculator needs two things: landscape area and the additional mulch depth you want to place. If an existing layer is staying in the bed, check its depth before assuming you need a completely new layer.
Worked example: 500 sq ft at 3 inches
Three inches is 0.25 ft. Multiply 500 × 0.25 to get 125 cubic feet, then divide by 27. The result is about 4.63 cubic yards before any practical rounding for supplier increments.

Bulk mulch and bags are the same math in different packaging
Bulk suppliers commonly quote cubic yards. Bagged mulch lists volume on the package. If you are buying bags, convert your required cubic yards to cubic feet and divide by the bag's labeled volume.
Irregular beds are easier if you split them up
Measure rectangles, circles and triangles separately, then add the areas together. A curved bed usually gives a better estimate when broken into a few simple pieces rather than treated as one oversized rectangle.
More mulch is not automatically better
Depth should fit the planting and site. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks, plant crowns or building materials. If the existing layer is already thick, the correct order may be much smaller than the calculator's default example.
Price the material separately
The optional price field estimates bulk material cost only. Delivery, installation, bed edging, weed removal and site preparation can be separate charges.
